Everyday Math - Mr. Carroll's Wiki

Unit 7

What I liked about Unit 7 was that it did a lot with negative and positive numbers, because I was having a really hard time understanding them at first. But as we went on in the unit it came more clear to me. ~Madeline~ January 29, 2008

I didn't really like dealing with the positive and negative
numbers at first because I found it quite confusing but as Mr.Carroll explained it more clearly and gave us different tips on how to make it easier, it became easier for me.--Lauren 29-1-08

What I liked was the positive and negative numbers because it was easy and really fun I look forward to learning more about positive and negative numbers it is really fun. It became way more easier for me through out the year.- Shannonlee-January 29, 2008

What I liked about Unit 7 was we learned things we never learned before in our whole life. I learned all about negative and positive numbers adding and subtracting. In the first time, I was very confused too but later on little by little, my brain got a lot more used to it so I must be doing good on the test.~Sung Hwan~

I have two tips; Study, and try your best. Also remember; two wrongs make a right! Finn 31.1.08

If you don't understand positive, negative numbers, draw a thermometer, and this: -(-) and +(+) is getting warmer, -(+) and +(-) is getting colder. Also, you can remember it by making a negative sign (two) by your hands and move your arms to be a positive sign. --SooMin---Jan, 31, 2008

I liked PEMDAS Everyday Math - Mr. Carroll's Wiki
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
PEMDAS is an easy way to remember the order of operations.
Heres a tip:
Think of a thermometer. It will help you when you are dealing with negative and positive numbers! When does the thermometer have more mercury in it?
You also discuss exponents so I enjoyed exponent football! It was great! You can
even play it on line at www.everydaymathonline.com , you need your password and user name.
~ Mitali ~ * January 31, 2008 *

I like doing the signs from our arms and hands to make a positive and negative sign. It really helped me to remember the rules during the Unit 7 Math Test. If you are also having trouble to understand that in a thermometer, the negative side, the color is red because, your nose gets red when it is really cold. --SooMin--Feb, 4, 2008

I liked to measure the angles. Especially, it was fun to draw the reference angle that stands for 90 degrees. I also liked to compare and find common denominators for fractions. --SooMin--Feb, 10, 2008

I liked to use TIBO for fractions, decimals, and percents. It was really easy to do it, but sometimes if it a big number, it is complicated. TIBO stands for,
Top
Inside
Bottom
Outside --SooMin--Feb, 16, 2008

Unit 8

What is so easy about finding equivalent fractions are that all you have to do is * the numerator and the denominator by the same two numbers and that is a equivalent fraction! ~ Madeline Feb. 18, 2008 ~

I like the way you learn to divide fractions. OF = multiply so you just multiply and flip the fractions of the second number. I like the Intergalactic Olympics because it was a fun way to learn how two divide. It was very easy and fun. I was surprised because it is very similar to the unit about fractions. I thought all of this will be one unit or different units close together. ~Mitali~ * February 18, 2008 *

When subtracting fractions with different denominator find a common denominator then once you find a common denominator for both fractions subtract it then you get your answer, its the same as adding fractions but after finding a common denominator you add it.( don't forget to simplify).

If you are stuck in problems like this: (2 * 1/4) You change the whole number 2 in to 2 over 1 multiply it by 1 over 4. So the answer is 2 over 4. But don't forget to simplify, then the final answer is 1 and a half. --SooMin--Feb, 23, 2008

Unit 9

One thing that I like is finding the coordinates and I making the turtle.~Lucy~March 1,2008~

I like the part where we make the graph and put dots to connect and make a shape or animal or letters.-Brandon 2/3/08

I liked when the teacher said the coordinates and then at the end it was Mr. Carroll's name CREW.-Vivian-3/2/08

I like when Mr. Carroll teaches us that when you are learning the coordinates, think of battle ship.-Vivian- 3/2/08

When we first started finding the area of the shapes I didn't really get how to do it but now I know how to do it and I enjoy it!~Lucy~March 3,2008~

I liked to do the game that we did in partners to find the mystery of the coordinate. I also liked to find the volume, perimeter, and area of the shapes. --SooMin--March, 10, 2008

I think this unit was really fun! Coordinates are really fun as you can plot them and create something amazing! Like Vivian wrote, think of battle ship. That is really fun! Another thing I liked was when we learned to find the area. If you think about it really isn't hard once you know the formula. The same goes with perimeter. Volume is actually easy when you know Area. I understand! ~Mitali~ * March 11, 2008 *

I thought finding the area of a triangle would be hard, it is actually very easy!! You just need to remember to take half of it! ~Mitali~ ~March 11, 2008~

If you want to, go to www.everydaymathonline.com and you can play a fun game called hidden treasure, it is just like battleship!
~Mitali~ ~March 11, 2008~

REMINDER: For the Unit 8 test on Thursday: There are some tips that you should know.
Tip 1: Remember to divide 2 or multiply 1/2 if the figure is a triangle.
Tip 2: If you have a triangle that has already the Base of the triangle, you don't need to divide it by 2 when you multiplied the height to the Base.
Tip 3: Please show your work neatly.
Tip 4: If you don't know a problem, just skip it and go to the next one. After you did some problems or finished it, go over the problem that you had problem with.
Tip 5: Just believe in yourself, be confident, ready, and mostly, think positive thoughts.
Good Luck Everyone!!! --SooMin--March, 12, 2008

I enjoyed doing the coordinates because it was really fun because it is kind of like drawing a picture.- Shannonlee-- March 19,2008

Unit 10

Figuring how much one thing weights to the other is a little hard to me but I am getting to know it a little better.~Lucy~March 18,2008~

It is really hard for me to find out how many marble weigh in a block but if I believe in myself!-- Shannonlee-- March 19,2008-

Finding out the weight was hard and I didn't really understand but now I fully understand but I rush on it, it's still sort of fun finding weights.-Brandon 20/3/08

It was really fun to figure out weights of different objects and the most fun part was when our class did 2 math pages that is based on finding weights with partners. My partner was Eugene and he was really good and smart to find out the weights really quickly. I liked the pages because it was comparing things on 2 pan balances. It was really interesting and scientific to find a way to solve the problem like a detective! I am really looking forward to learn more about interesting ways to find out the weights of objects by using pan balances!!! Tip: First you cross out the same object as the other pan have. Then, you can keep on going until you find the answer. But, the most important thing to do is to believe in yourself and have confidence. --SooMin--March, 23, 2008
I think the pan balances were not to hard. In the beginning I had trouble, but after I asked my friends about it, I started to think it was really fun! this taught me a lesson. Always ask friends or a teacher for help if you do not understand something in school. ++Finn 1/4/08++

In this unit I enjoy the balance problems we had. When you you get to understand it more it is actually kind of easy to me. I am glad that this unit is after some of the previous units because you need some things from the other units to help you with this unit. I actually found the algebra expressions a little hard for me! ~Mitali~ * April 1, 2008 *

I liked to measure the radius, diameter and the circumstance for circles because it was really interesting to learn new things. Also, it was fun to do an activity together with Maddy to measure different kinds of circles to learn better and memorise them easier. Most people say that by actually doing it, helps you to understand more clearly. --SooMin--April, 8, 2008
It was neat when we learned about the rule of the In and Out boxes and to label them on a graph. It was really interesting that math works out every time no matter what you do. It is like a simple learning. Once you know the fun of math, you can do anything about it and understand it. --SooMin--April, 20, 2008

I liked when we get to work out the pan balance in different ways so that we could do it in different ways and understand it.-Vivian-4-29-08

Unit 11

I liked the group activity that you measure our room measurements because it builds up teamwork, math skills and understanding it in a better way so that you will remember it more longer, by actually doing things. It was kind of like a challenge to measure things and work them out one by one at a time. It was confusing when we got mixed up for the measurements. But I still like this activity!!! --SooMin--April, 23, 2008

I like when we can work as a group and measure the 4 sides of the class room. It was really fun. Also we get to learn to be as a group and work as a group. It will get people to learn more about their classmates.-Vivian--29-08

The Unit 11 Math Test was kind of hard and confusing because I am not really good at geometric solids and other shapes that are 3D shapes. Also, it was confusing to find out the surface area of a rectangular prism. If you are wondering what is the surface area of a cylinder it is this formula:
(2 * 3.14 * radius2) + ((2 * 3.14 * radius) * height)= surface area. I hope this formula will help you for your Unit 11 Math Test!!!
--SooMin--April, 30, 2008

What I enjoyed doing in Unit 11 was when we made those 3D shapes out of the paper.I enjoyed doing that!~Lucy~April 30,2008~

In Unit 11 I liked it when we get into a group and we measure different places around the classroom because working by yourself with this type of stuffs will make you bored and slower at finishing it but with other people helping, giving ideas you can get the job done easier and you won't be so bored

Unit 12

It is challenging to work out problems of fractions because I am kind of weak on fractions. Also, it was really enjoyable to learn the factor tree again to find the prime factorization, and the new things are: GCF: Greatest Common Denominator LCM: Least Common Multiples It was confusing to find out those problems because I get mixed up if I should do this for it or not. GCF: Find the factorization of the two numbers, circle the same numbers and multiply them all up and the answer is up! For LCM, which is kind of the opposite is to circle all the common numbers and slash out one of the pairs and multiply the rest of them all up! I liked how we find the fraction problems because it is quite fun to multiply numbers in to it, and I thought that doing the fractions were really enjoying and interesting. I would like to learn more about Unit 12 'till the Unit 12 Test...and I think that it is coming up soon this week!!! --SooMin--May, 9, 2008

It is very fun when Mr.Carroll taught us about the Least Common factor and teach us that. It was really fun.-Vivian-5-10-08

Tips to help you for the Unit 12 Math Test tomorrow:
Tip 1: Remember to show your work every time
Tip 2: Show how did you find the answer by factor trees, and factor rainbows.

Tip 3: Please show your work neatly.
Tip 4: You should show your work for the fractions by example: 4/5 and ?/40 You show you multiplied 8 in to 5 = 20. Do that multiplication sign on top, to show your work, that you did not cheated.
Tip 4: If you don't know a problem, just skip it and go to the next one. After you did some problems or finished it, go over the problem that you had problem with.
Tip 5: Just believe in yourself, be confident, ready, and mostly, think positive thoughts.

I wish everyone good luck on the test, since it is the last unit of the Math subject. Good Luck Everyone, Do Your Best!!! --SooMin--May, 13, 2008

I enjoyed it when we played the Factor-Captor game. Also when we had learned the GCF-Greatest Common Factor and LCM-Least common Multiple.I think that using the factor tree was a good way to find the GCF and LCM.~Lucy~May 22,2008~

End of the year test

I thought that the end of the year test was just a review on what we already knew except it was all combined into one big test.Eric-21-08-

It was a challenge with the negative and positive numbers but it helped me when I drew out a thermometer.--Lauren 23-5-08

I think that this page is really helpful because you can know the things that you've been working on revising through your head, what you know about the subjects. It also helps by reminding us what we did for our units, that are geometric figures, factor trees, and other informations!
