Our Friend the FractionThis is a featured page

We have been working with fractions a lot lately. You may put any helpful tips on this page that you think it would help someone who is also working with fractions too. Your tips should cover anything that involves fractions. A few topics might include:
  • Adding
  • Subtracting
  • Changing to decimals/percents

1. Always reduce/simplify fractions. This is also known as writing them in their lowest terms. Mr. Carroll

2. If the Numerator is larger than the Denominator, change that improper fraction to a mixed number. It'll be a whole lot easier!Maddy

3.If you need to find out the least or the greatest of the decimals, it will be easier to place a zero at the end. For example,( 0.12 0.05 0.2 0.78 0.6 0.043 0.1 ) Place the zeros at 0.050 0.20 0.60 0.10 at the end. It will be the same place value of numbers. So, the least to greatest is 0.043 0.05 0.1 0.12 0.2 0.6 0.78 SooMin

4. The denominator is the total number possible for a fraction. If the numerator (the amount of how much or how many units is there) is bigger than the denominator follow step 2.Taka

5. When changing mix number into percents when it has like 1 and 3/4 1=100% so go with 1 100% 2 200% etc. Brandon 6. To change a mixed number into an improper fraction, simply multiply the denominator and the whole number and then add the numerator to the product (answer of multiplication problem). Praj
7. If you need help changing a fraction to a decimal, You Need Guidance. Use Ms. TIBO

Bottom
Outside
She will help you loads. Numerator inside, denominator outside. NOTE: When you put the numerator inside what helps is adding a decimal and a fair amount of zero's. ~Mitali~
8. Use your student reference book. Praj
9.The numerator represents the number used.--Hanson(ch)

10.Denominator means total number possible. --ALEX

11. You can simplify a fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by the largest common factor. Example: 10/15 = 2/3 because 10 divided by 5 =2 and 15 divided by 5 =3.~Rohan~

12.If you want to change a mixed number to a whole number or a improper fraction, it's simple. For example, change 2 wholes and 7/10 into an improper fraction. Step 1. Multiply the denominator, ten into 2 which is 20 and add 20 into 7 and the improper fraction is 27/10.~Sung Hwan~

13. If you're trying to put some fractions in order from least to greatest, here's a tip:
If the denominators are the same, look at the numerator. The bigger it is, the greater the value.
If the numerators are the same, look at the denominators. The smaller it is, the greater the value.--Monica--

14. If you want to add fractions and the denominators and numerators are different, consider this tip. If the denominators are from the same multiplication table ( 2,8) divide or multiply the numerator and denominator by the number to get to the same number. Bring the denominator down and add the numerator, there's your answer. However, if the denominators are not from the same multiplication table (3, 7) multiply the first denominator (3) by the other (7), do the same for the numerator. Your next step is to take the second denominator (7) and multiply it by 3 over 3. There is your answer: the numerators added up out of 21. If you can, reduce. ~Mitali~

15. If you want to know a simple way to change fractions to decimals, read the following:
1.) If the denominator is either 2, 4, 5, or any number that can be changed to 10 or 100 by multiplying a number with it, then change the denominator to 10 or 100.
2.) If it helps you, read it out loud.
3.) It should be easy now. Just change it.
Example:You want to change 4/25 to a decimal. 4/25 multiplied by 4/4 = 16/100 16/100 = 0.16 --Monica--

16. Always remember to simplify/reduce fractions that can be divided by the same number. Example: 4/16 can still be simplified so you can divide it by 4/4 or 2/2. Either way, the answer will be 1/4. ~ ~Lauren~~

17. If the denominator is different look at the numerator. It is a helpful hint,so remember it!

18. If you want to add fractions and the denominators are not the same don't worry you can multiply it by each other for example one fifth + one tenth multiply on fifth by ten over ten and multiply one tenth by five over five and the answer would be 15 over 50 and then simplify it and it would become 3 over 10.----Shannon

19. There are some really cool fraction games on the web that we play in class. You can play them anytime to build your knowledge about fractions. Try "Fraction Frenzy", its our favorite!! We have competitions at the end of class to see who can get to the highest level
~Ms. Hunter
20.) As Mitali told you before, Ms.TIBO can help you with lots of things! Like when you're trying to change a fraction to a decimal. For example, 48/167. Divide 167 into 48. The answer should be 0.28... Then, move the decimal 2 spaces to the right. Then, round the number to the nearest whole number. That would be the percent you're looking for. ~~Monica~~

21) If you have trouble learning that 1/2 is 0.5, 50%, you could try writing it out a few times to help you memorize it more easily. Or you could read it aloud. ~* Lauren~*

22.When adding fractions if denominator is the same just add numerator. If the denominator is different look for a common denominator than add.(remember to simplify)

23. If you want to have common denominators, and even the numerators are different, you can multiply or divide in to a same number, and you also multiply, divide the number to the numerator. And you can see if the numerators are bigger or smaller. ----Feb, 3, 2008

24. When you need to change a decimal to a percent just multiply it by 100 or move the decimal 2 places. - Eric-march/3

25. If you need to multiply mixed numbers, you should first change it to an improper fraction, and look if there is numbers that can be simplified. (Example: 7/3 * 12/14= 2 The reason why the answer is 2, is because 7 goes in to 14 by 2. Also, 3 goes into 12 by 4. ) --SooMin--March, 25, 2008

26. If you have a trouble of understanding how to solve problems that are: ( 3/4 of 5 ) You need to remind yourself that the word, 'of' means to multiply. So, if you go on the problem that I gave you, you can solve it like this: ( 3/4 * 5) change it to: ( 3/4 * 5/1) and the answer is: ( 3 and 3/4 ) --SooMin--April, 23, 2008

27. Before you eat a pie, pizza or a round shaped food think about fraction to divide it equally and fairly to give the divided food to others.~Sung Hwan~May 2, 2008
